Tips For Cleaning Your Apartment And Keeping It Clean

2019 is here, and it’s a great time to start fresh and what better way to start than with a clean apartment. Every year people make all sorts of resolutions that seem to fade just a few weeks after making them. Having a clean apartment not only makes you feel good but if done right can stay clean and clutter free all year long.

We compiled a few simple tips that will help you maintain a clean apartment that will make you proud.

1. Out With The Old, In With The New

The beginning of the year is always a great time to reflect on what worked and what didn’t work the year before. It’s also a great time to do an inventory of your apartment possessions and decide if they are needed or just taking up room and collecting dust.

Professionals who are experts of de-cluttering homes and apartments suggest that if an item hasn’t been used in a year, chances are it will not be used. Examples include clothes and kitchenware, but it could be almost anything. Some professionals will have clients put all their clothes in a pile and go through each item, making decisions as to keep or give away.

2. Clean The Fridge, Stove, And Cabinets

Let’s face it; a refrigerator can become overwhelmed with leftovers, drinks, and misc items. Doing an inventory of what is there and what can be thrown away will free up space and make it easier to find the things you do use. If an item is questionable or unappetizing, get rid of it.

After you have gone through your refrigerator and done a thorough cleaning, doing an inventory once a week is a great way to keep your fridge looking good and help you know what you need to get at the grocery store.

If you’re a foodie and love to cook, your stove will become messy with grease, crumbs and burned grime. Unless you’re preparing food every day, a good rule of thumb is to clean the stove-top once a month.

Kitchen cabinets can be magnets for expired food, medicines, and misc junk. Check for expiration dates and things you don’t use and throw them out.

3. Nooks And Crannies

Every apartment has those areas that are easy to overlook, but may be essential to clean seasonally. Examples include air filters and ducts, fan blades, windows, and blinds.

For those who have allergies, it is especially important to schedule regular cleaning to reduce dust and pollen which collects over time.

A good rule of thumb is to do a cleaning every season change (Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall).

4. Floors and Carpets

Like the Nooks and Crannies, Carpets and Floors should have a scheduled cleaning day.

Even if you vacuum regularly, your vacuum collects only a fraction of the dust, dirt and other allergens in your carpet. Carpet professionals recommend steam cleaning carpets to remove dirt and grim most vacuums miss.

If you do decide you want to steam clean your carpets, there are two main options including hiring a professional carpet cleaning company or renting a high-end steam cleaning machine. Going the licensed professional route is usually a better choice and less complicated.
